Blog # 8 - The Translator Reflection

FINAL BLOG ASSIGNMENT - The Translator Reflection
The book, The Translator is an autobiography written by Sudanese native Daoud Hari, telling of his dangerous life as a translator for international news stations, in various African countries. Daoud came from a small village in the Darfur region of Sudan originally. As a child, he witnessed his village being invaded by rebels, kidnappings taking place, gunfights, and explosions taking place. As a child, Daoud is sent away by his father to a school in El Fasher, where he will learn about politics and languages. He is persuaded here by his brother, Ahmed that he should use his brain, not a gun to make his life, and the lives of those around him better.  As a young adult he began traveling around African countries, such as Libya and Chad, looking for work. After a period of doing various jobs, Daoud returns home, to see his ravaged village, destroyed from attacks by a group of rebels known as the Janjaweed.

Following this, Daoud sets off on a quest to help those around him, through serving as a translator for reporters trying to tell the story of the genocides taking place in north eastern Africa. Daoud will work with reporters from esteemed international newspapers, such as The New York Times, NBC, and BBC, as well as for the United Nations and other aid groups. Daoud works with various reporters throughout the course of his life, interviewing victims of rape, torture, and abuse. A powerful section of the book that I feel shocked both myself and my class into a state of disbelief, was in chapters ten and eleven. Chapter eleven is entitled two and a half million stories, and tells some incredibly horrific tales of refugees whom Daoud interviews. Daoud learns about the terrible living conditions (shacks) many refugees living in Chad rely on. Daoud learns of the dangers for the girls/women in the village, as they often times are raped while looking for firewood. After listening to many of the personal experiences of these real life people, I feel it caused my class to have a profound realization of how corrupt the world is.

Experiences like this can be found also in various other places, where Daoud and others speak to refugees who have had their lives ruined, their families taken from them, and even themselves scarred for life from the crude experiences they have witnessed. A remarkable thing that stood out to me here was the surreal amount of chaos and danger all around. It seems these people are driven to kill, for selfish ambitions alone. Manslaughter is simply a part of daily life and society for many of these people. From my reading of The Translator I have had a new understanding of how truly broken the world is. I have realized that without God, these people are driven selfishly to do unspeakable things, in order to get fulfillment. They are lost, broken, and confused. They cause harm to innocent people, killing without remorse. This is wrong, and although I am glad news organizations such as the ones Daoud works with exist in order to tell people about these catastrophes, I also understand that action needs to be taken by people to stop these genocides. I believe that this is a problem too big for anyone to stop alone. This is a situation that simply requires God’s omnipotence and wisdom to come along, in order for people to put an end to this destruction.

Blog # 7 - International Air Travel Day

1)      My holiday is called international air travel day. It is a celebration of the invention of airplanes, and air travel in general. It celebrates the amazing things airplanes have enabled humans to do. It also celebrates the Wright brothers’ invention of the airplane, and their first successful flight on December 17, 1903. The Wright brothers, Orville (August 19, 1871 – January 30, 1948) and Wilbur (April 16, 1867 – May 30, 1912), were two Americans credited with inventing and building the world's first successful airplane and making the first controlled, and powered plane. Sustaining heavier-than-air human flight in 1903. My holiday takes place on December 17, and celebrates the ways air travel has revolutionized humanity, and enabled us to do such incredible things.

2)      The idea for my holiday came from a realization of how useful and even essential air travel has become in society today. The airplane is a profound invention that has allowed us to travel and explore our world faster, and easier than ever before. The holiday will be a global holiday that is compulsory for all countries.

On the day of the holiday, May 17, all air travel worldwide will be stopped for 24 hours, in order for people to have a chance to realize how important airplanes are, and how much they need them. Each city worldwide will organize parades with inflatable airplane floats, kites, and a fly over by the air force, or Snowbirds during the parade. Everyone at these parades will only be able to purchase airplane food, and only able to drink out of the plastic cups used on airplanes.

The song “airplanes” by B.O.B. featuring Hailey Williams will be played all day, and will be the only song played during the duration of the parades. There will also be a short video clip shown of the Wright Brothers first flight. The international center of the holiday will be at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, where the Wright brothers conducted their first ever flights. The Wright Brothers originally selected Kitty Hawk as their test site because of its wind, sand, hilly terrain and remote location. There will be an international ceremony performed here, that will be globally televised in over 500 languages across the globe.
The makeup of the parades will differ from city to city. However, all parades will feature activities such as face painting, some free airplane food items, and music and dancing. Most cities will have various airplane models on display for people to view. The focus of every parade however has to be how airplanes have bettered people’s lives, as well as the evolution of the airplane over the years. The parades will last for about two hours, and will be feature fun filled activities everyone can enjoy.

The corporate aspect of this holiday will come in the regard that people will be able to purchase commemorative airplane souvenirs. Post cards, small metal airplane models, airplane posters, airplane themed pencils, and other accessories will be promoted around this holiday. This day also can be used as a way for corporate sponsors to unveil the newest technologies present in the airplane industry. People will have the opportunity to view inside portions of these new public and private planes as well. To ensure this holiday remains relevant and interesting, only the most unique and revolutionary airplane models will be displayed each year.

3)      My personal favourite holiday is Christmas. It has always been my favourite, since I love all the special, heartwarming traditions attached to it. It is a unique time of year. The number of specific holiday items related to it, such as Christmas songs, movies, decorations, and parades that take place surrounding it, make it unlike any other holiday. Christmas for me is a time to celebrate Jesus birth, but also to enjoy wholesome food, and family reunions, where people are able to catch up, and socialize. Christmas is originally a Biblically themed event, celebrating the time when Jesus came to earth as a baby. It is a time to praise God for His love in giving us His one and only son, as a sacrifice for our sin.

Christmas has definitely lost its original meaning, as it has had the focus shifted off God and His gift of His son Jesus, and on to the retail and commercial side of things. Christmas today is as much about buying things, spending money, and travelling as anything else. This is something that saddens me greatly, as I see that I am growing up in a generation of people who couldn’t care less about the real reason we have Christmas. Christ has almost completely been removed from the holiday, except for in Churches. This is a problem that has slowly been getting worse and worse with each coming year, and is one that can only be stopped by cutting down on the retail aspects of Christmas, and bringing out much more the real meaning of Christmas. I feel that people today often times don’t understand Christmas for anything besides an excuse to spend money on their loved ones. This is an issue that needs to be combatted by either cutting back on the commercial aspects of Christmas, or finding ways to expose people to what Christmas should look like, as it was originally intended.

Blog # 6: Short Story Overview

Conflict:
Mark has never met his birth parents. He was raised in foster care, and has spent his life working in menial jobs, without a solid income. He has no family, but has decided he wants to make enough money to visit his parents on the Island of Hawaii. Mark has no real skills that would make him much money, but he feels that if he can become a juggling performer, it may fund his trip. Mark has never juggled, and does not have very good hand-eye coordination, so he will have to work very hard to become a good juggler, so people will watch him, and give him money. The problem is that where he lives, street act are not uncommon, so Mark will have lots of competition, and will have to work very hard if he wants to stick out as an elite performer in his neighbourhood.
Theme:
Mark has never grown up with much, he never has had any money to spare, and has barely been able to make ends meet most months, however, he believes his parents may be able to help him now, as they were not able to raise him when he was born. Mark is determined to work hard and show dedication to his goal of becoming a great juggler. He knows he has given up on too many things in his life, and he is determined not to let this opportunity pass him by. Mark will need to incorporate practise time into his already hectic life, working two part time jobs. He will need perseverance, and discipline if he has a shot of making any money as a juggler, with all the competition around.
Setting:
Set in Mark’s home of Phoenix, Arizona, present day. Mark lives in a small single bedroom apartment by himself. He is single, and has never been married. He enjoys his life, but is not content with the fact he has never met his birth parents. This bothers Mark greatly, and has caused him to look for a way to fly himself to Kauai, Hawaii, where his parents live. Mark is determined to accomplish this goal, and his dream of going to meet his birth parents gives him hope for the future, and determination to complete his task.
Basic Plot events:
Initial action: Mark is not content with his uneventful life, and after being abandoned by his parents at birth since they were not able to take care of him, he has decided he wants to find go meet and visit them, in their home of Hawaii.
Rising action:  Mark begins practising juggling and becomes very good. He picks a place to perform his act, but soon after, realizes he has lots of competing acts standing in his way. Mark feels unwelcome by the other performers around him, as they are making his money making scheme very challenging to accomplish.
Climax: Mark realizes that the competing jugglers and he are not getting along, and it is not working for them to share the corner space, so they mutually decide to have a juggling competition, judged by the public, in order to decide which juggler will be able to remain on the corner, and who will have to leave.
Falling Action: The jugglers compete, and to his amuse, Mark puts on an excellent performance, and wins the competition, giving him sole access to the prime performing corner in his neighbourhood.
Resolution: Mark continues his juggling work in front of much larger audiences, providing him with the money to go on his trip to Hawaii. Mark buys his ticket, and flies to Hawaii. He meets his parents, and they are overjoyed to see him.
Protagonist:
-           Fairly tall (5 ft. 10 in.)
-          Silvery Grey full head of hair
-          Independent
-          Timid
Antagonist:
-          The antagonist is Marks timidness, shy nature, and lack of confidence. This is what is holding him back from being recognized by the public as a great juggler. He doesn’t enjoy confrontation, and because of this has missed job opportunities and promotions in the past. Part of this stems from Marks harsh foster care upbringing, but part of this is simply Marks personality. These are issues that are preventing Mark from achieving his goal, and are standing in his way.

Crisp autumn leaves stuck out before me, I glanced at them intently, my knees shaking, barely able to support my weak body. The sharp contrast of the reddish leaves before me caused me to zone out the rest of the forest around me. The dark bark of the red oak tree accentuated the leaves and my greatest fears simultaneously. If it weren’t for the warm colours given off by the tree, I knew I would be inconsolably afraid in amongst my dull surroundings.
The bitter, yet familiar taste of my own blood reassured me of my surroundings. I consumed the liquid greedily and took a moment to evaluate my perplex situation. What again had led me to this dim forest, and before the beauty of this grand oak? I shuffled forward through the layers of damp, fallen leaves. Inching forwards I came beneath the extravagant expanse of the oak tree.
I lifted my neck upwards, starring face to face with damp bark. I watched fresh sap trickle elegantly down the broad trunk of the tree. I yearned for the sweet sensation of the sap upon my lips. As I moved closer, the tree provided me the premature assurance I had so desperately longed for. And at that moment, I decided I could remain no more.

ELA Blog Assignment # 4: Short Story Idea

“Flashes of light raced around me as I stared up at the ceiling. I felt barely conscious, but I knew I would come around. I clenched my fist together, as I felt anger rush through me.” Drayden Marsch lay still in a dull hospital room, silence surrounding him. He starred at blank walls in an uncomfortable bed. Sharp pains seized through his body. Confusion surrounded the situation; he had no conscious memory of coming to such a place. What had happened? What odd occurrence had transported him to this mysterious new place? He had no conception of time, how long had it been since his last conscious memory, riding his bike down the highway in the pouring rain. He remembered the feel of harsh drops of water, slashing across his broad face. Why had he even left his house? The security he once knew, the comfort he desperately wanted. The sound of a truck horn had blasted from within his ear drums. Could he move, could he escape, and most of all, where was he? His family would wonder where he was, what he was doing. Faced with unfamiliar surroundings, and a desolate future, he could only hold on to the memories he had. Drayden’s mind raced, he began to question his surrounding, his reality. What was real and what was his mind simply playing a game with him? He faced an intellectual battle to remember where he was, what dangers he might be facing, and what was on the horizon for him. Dangerous reality, or an unsettling dream, this was the decision Drayden had to make about everything that surrounded him.
